Calcium chloride is a salt composed of chlorine and calcium elements (chemical formula CaCl2). It appears as colorless cubic crystals, white or grayish white granules, honeycomb blocks, balls, irregular granules, or powders. This slightly toxic compound is odorless with a slightly bitter taste. As a typical ionic halide, it exists as a white solid at room temperature with extreme hygroscopic properties, prone to deliquescence when exposed to air.
Highly soluble in water (releasing significant heat), it forms a slightly alkaline solution. Also soluble in alcohol and acetic acid. Calcium chloride serves multiple industrial purposes including as a refrigerating agent, antifreeze, concrete accelerator, building mortar additive, preservative, and textile finishing agent.
