• Appearance: Typically appears as a pale green crystalline solid or powder.
• Solubility: Highly soluble in water, with a solubility of approximately 1 g in 1.5 ml of water at 25°C. It is sparingly soluble in ethanol.

Applications:

Industrially, ferrous sulphate is mainly used as a precursor to other iron compounds. It is a reducing agent, for the reduction of chromate in cement.

Nutritional Supplement
Together with other iron compounds, ferrous sulphate is used to fortify foods and treat iron-deficiency anemia. Constipation is a frequent and uncomfortable side effect associated with the administration of oral supplements. Stool softeners often are prescribed to prevent constipation.

Water Treatment
Ferrous sulphate has been applied for the purification of water by flocculation and for phosphate removal in municipal and industrial sewage treatment plants to prevent eutrophication of surface water bodies.

It is stable in dry conditions but can effloresce (lose water of crystallization) in dry air. It is also prone to oxidation to ferric compounds in moist air, forming a brownish-yellow precipitate.
