Product Description

Ferrous sulfate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula FeSO₄. It appears as a white powder and is odorless. Its crystalline hydrate is the heptahydrate at room temperature, commonly known as “green vitriol,” which is a light green crystal. It effloresces in dry air and oxidizes on the surface to form a brown basic iron sulfate in moist air. At 56.6℃, it becomes the tetrahydrate, and at 65℃, it becomes the monohydrate. Ferrous sulfate is soluble in water and almost insoluble in ethanol. Its aqueous solution oxidizes slowly in air when cold and more rapidly when hot. The oxidation process can be accelerated by the addition of alkali or exposure to light. Its relative density (d15) is 1.897.

Applications

1. Water Treatment
 Ferrous sulfate is used for the coagulation and purification of water, as well as for the removal of phosphates from municipal and industrial wastewater to prevent eutrophication of water bodies.

2. Reducing Agent
 A large amount of ferrous sulfate is used as a reducing agent, primarily to reduce chromates in cement.

3. Coloring Agent
 a. Ferrous sulfate is required in the production of tannic acid iron ink and other inks. It is also used as a mordant in wood staining.
 b. Ferrous sulfate can be used to dye concrete a yellowish rust color.
 c. Woodworkers use ferrous sulfate to impart a silvery hue to maple wood.

4. Agriculture
 Ferrous sulfate is used to adjust soil pH, promote the formation of chlorophyll (also known as iron fertilizer), and prevent chlorosis caused by iron deficiency in ornamental plants. It is an essential element for acid-loving plants, especially iron trees. In agriculture, it is also used as a pesticide to control diseases such as wheat black disease, apple and pear scab, and fruit tree canker; it can also be used as a fertilizer to remove moss and lichens from tree trunks.

5. Analytical Chemistry
 Ferrous sulfate can be used as a reagent in chromatographic analysis.
