Commonly known as effervescent alkali, it is a water-soluble silicate, and its aqueous solution is commonly known as water glass, which is a mineral binder. Its chemical formula is R2O · nSiO2, in which R2O is an alkali metal oxide, and n is the ratio of the number of moles of silica to alkali metal oxide, known as the molar number of water glass. The commonly used water glass in architecture is an aqueous solution of sodium silicate.
